Hello OR Hi

Good morning, Good afternoon, Good evening, Good night.


Natural Speaking

Mr.Mansoor meets Mrs. Jasmin, one of his student, and her husband in the street.

Mr. M:                         Good morning Mrs. Jasmin

Mrs. Jasmin:              Good morning Mr. Mansoor, How are you?

Mr. M:                         I’m fine, Thanks, and you?

Mrs. Jasmin:              I’m good. Mr Mansoor, this is my Husband Rufaid, Rufaid this is                                                                     Mr. Mansoor my teacher

Mr. Rufaid:                 Pleased to meet you.

Mr. M:                         Pleased to meet you too. Are you from India, Mr.Rufaid?


Mr. Rufaid:                 Yes, South India, from Kerala, and you, are from London?

Mr. M:                         No, I’m from India but I live in London now.

Mr. Rufaid:                 Well, Goodbye Mr.Mansoor, It was nice to see you.

Mr. M:                         Yes, Goodbye.


What to say and When?

When you meet people you say Good morning as a first thing in the morning meetings, Good afternoon from about 12.00 till around 17.00 and Good evening from then on.


Hello and Hi are informal but can be used at anytime.


How are you? Responses

Great Thanks | Fine Thanks | I’m OK Thanks | Not too bad Thanks



When leaving you say Goodbye, because Bye is more informal

When leaving at night you say Good night.
